Build Season - $100 plus taxes January - February, 2026 Mondays (6:30 - 9 PM), Wednesdays (6:30 - 9 PM) and Saturdays (1 - 4 PM) between January 5 to Feb 28, 2026 (22 sessions) (excludes the Family Day weekend (no sessions on Sat, Feb 14 and Mon, Feb 16) and the week of March break) ($4.55 per session per student) District Events March - April, 2026 * Our team attends two district events in Ontario each year, competing with and against other teams in exciting, high-energy events. This is a wonderful time to join our team. On a weekly basis, our team (grades 5 to 12) gather in our training studio for 3.5 hours to acquire vital STEM skills: Beginner Program (for junior students) Sparkfun - Experiential Robotics Platform (XRP) Kit (3 months) Build and program the robot using Blockly (visual block editor) and Python (text code editor) to complete the following activities: drive the robot (driver-operated and autonomously); measure distances with the ultrasonic sensor; sense and follow line with the line sensor; pick up items with the servo arm; and more. Hands-on Assignment This is a visual, drag-and-drop graphical programming system similar to Scratch. Blockly is a good choice for learners with little to no programming experience. This is an easy-to-understand and good-to-start programming language. It makes it an ideal language for anyone to start their coding journey. The build season is an intense period where our team designs, builds, and programs a new robot for the challenge. Our team attends two district events in Ontario each year, competing with and against other teams in exciting, high-energy events. Competitions are 2.5 days long, either Friday to Sunday or Thursday to Saturday. If our team performs well, we may qualify to the Provincial Championships and the World Championships, which were most recently held in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and Houston, Texas, U.S.A., respectively. Competing against teams with more advanced robots, larger memberships, and many sponsors was a bit daunting, however we brought our “game” to the field. In every match, we gave it our all and continuously improved our performance. We are incredibly proud of our mighty team of three students, who built Buddy — a wooden robot that not only reached the Provincial Championships but also won the 2025 Rookie All-Star Award! We are building momentum for an even greater season ahead! If you have ever dreamed of creating, innovating, and making an impact, now is the time. Also, we are thrilled to join the Waterloo Wellington FIRST group, a community with over 80 professional mentors, 146 awards and 24 tournaments wins. Week 8 Week 8 - Accomplishments: Competition ready – Fine-tuned Buddy for inspection compliance by updating software and firmware, refining the linear slider (algae) and kitbot (coral), enhancing bumpers, securing the turntable, taping battery connections, and more. Upcoming activities: Team wear – Pick up our hoodies from Kitchener Screen Printing . Practice3 – Operate Buddy to improve the timing of coral and algae scoring while identifying minor enhancements. Improve robustness – Ensure proper cable management, securely fasten all devices, and label bumpers with the team number. Over the next 2 weeks our small but mighty team will further train Buddy for the upcoming competitions (University of Waterloo and McMaster University). Week 9 A special thank you to Terry (Team 2702 (Rebels)) for guidance on enhancing robustness. Accomplishments: Team wear – Picked up our hoodies from Kitchener Screen Printing . Improved robustness - Ensured proper cable management, securely fastened all devices, removed the turntable, and labelled bumpers with the team number. Practice3 – Scored coral from all three starting positions in autonomous mode within 5 seconds. Scored five coral in the trough within 40 seconds during teleoperated (driver-controlled) mode. Upcoming activities: Practice3 – Operate Buddy to improve the timing of coral and algae scoring while identifying minor enhancements. Over the next week our small but mighty team will further train Buddy for the upcoming competitions (University of Waterloo and McMaster University). 1st District Event University of Waterloo A special thank you to WWFIRST and Team 4039 (MakeShift Robotics ) for helping prepare and/or improve our robot (Buddy) during our first Ontario District event at the University of Waterloo. By seeking feedback (growth mindset), supporting others (gracious professional), and focusing on doing your best (being in the moment), our students are making their journey a memorable one. Accomplishments : Qualification Ranking: 10th out of 30 teams Achieved highest match score with a rookie team: 206 points (M18 ) Only Rookie Team (1st year team) to Captain a Playoff Alliance (#6) Reached Round 3 of 5 with Teams 7475 (WIRED 7475 ) and 6162 (Cap Alpaca 6162 ) Upcoming activities: Practice3 – Operate Buddy to improve the timing of coral and algae scoring while identifying minor enhancements. Next week, our small but mighty team will further train Buddy for our second District event at McMaster University. Please cheer them on as they gear up for competitions in March! 2nd District Event McMaster University A special thank you to Team 5406 (Celt-X ) and Team 4039 (MakeShift Robotics ) for helping us to improve our robot (Buddy) during our second Ontario District event at McMaster University. We were inspired by the incredible teams we saw in action. Although we did not make it to the playoffs, we proudly supported our fellow teams and stayed ready as a backup. To our surprise and excitement, Team 10218 (No Signal) was honored with the 2025 Rookie All-Star Award! We dedicate this award to WWFIRST . Your guidance and support were invaluable in helping us enhance Buddy and navigate the challenges of our district events. We are incredibly grateful for the WWFIRST community and everything we have learned from you. Thank you! Accomplishments : Overall Qualification Ranking: 86th out of 130 teams Qualified for the FIRST Ontario Provincial Championship (Apr 2 to 5) Please cheer them on as we head to provincials! Provincial Championship A special thank you to FIRST Robotics Canada and the Argosy Grant Foundation for their generous support and guidance — they sparked our incredible journey. On January 4th, our small but curious team kicked off the 2025 Reefscape First Robotics Competition season at Woodland Christian High School. We received our robot kit, brainstormed strategies alongside Teams 4678 (CyberCavs ) and 3683 (Team Dave ), and set our sights on building a robust robot capable of scoring both coral and algae. Little did we know how quickly the next eight weeks would fly by. On January 18th, we attended a Kitbot workshop at Burlington Central High School, with incredible support from Teams 1114 (Simbotics ) and 2386 (Burlington Central Trojans ). We programmed our robot, Buddy, and built the assembly to score coral. By early February, Buddy was training at the WWFIRST practice field in Waterloo, fine-tuning his coral-scoring skills. Soon after, we added a linear slider to collect algae and place it in the processor. At every practice session, at every Ontario District event, and at the Provincial Championships, we actively sought advice from other teams and relentlessly improved Buddy — making over 21 upgrades!
